Demonstratives, Frames of Reference, and Semantic Universals of Space

چکیده

There is a large body of research indicating that speakers of (familiar) European languages tend to encode and conceptualize space from an egocentric perspective, but linguistic fieldworkers have shown that speakers of certain other languages (e.g. Tzeltal) often describe the same spatial scenes based on fixed coordinates of the environment. This has led some researcher to challenge longstanding assumptions about semantic universals of space and the uniformity of spatial cognition. Specifically, Levinson and colleagues have questioned the hypothesis that there is a universal preference for egocentric, body-oriented representations of space in language and cognition. It is the purpose of the present paper to reconsider this hypothesis in light of an important class of spatial terms that has been disregarded in this research: demonstratives such as English this and that and here and there. The paper shows that the semantic interpretation of demonstratives presupposes a coordinate system with the same conceptual constituents as body-based expressions such as left and right or up and down. Combining evidence from linguistic typology with psychological research on joint attention, it is argued that demonstratives constitute a universal class of spatial terms that invoke an egocentric, body-anchored frame of reference grounded in basic principles of spatial and social cognition.

Language and Spatial Memory in Japanese and English

Demonstratives are among the most frequent words in all languages, but demonstrative systems vary considerably between languages. In two experiments, we tested demonstrative use and the influence of demonstratives on spatial memory in Japanese and English – languages with purportedly very different demonstrative systems. Participants engaged in a ‘memory game’, tapping their use of demonstrativ...

Tense, Temporal Expressions and Demonstrative Licensing in Natural Discourse

Demonstrative terms are highly contextdependent elements both in deictic and anaphoric uses. When reference is transferred from a visual, threedimensional context to the textual domain, information-structure factors (i.e. the cognitive status of the antecedent, recency of mention, syntactic structure or the semantic type of the antecedent) have an effect on speaker preferences for selecting dem...

Generating an Indoor space routing graph using semantic-geometric method

The development of indoor Location-Based Services faces various challenges that one of which is the method of generating indoor routing graph. Due to the weaknesses of purely geometric methods for generating indoor routing graphs, a semantic-geometric method is proposed to cover the existing gaps in combining the semantic and geometric methods in this study. The proposed method uses the CityGML...

Banach Pair Frames

In this article, we consider pair frames in Banach spaces and   introduce Banach pair frames. Some various concepts in the frame theory such as frames, Schauder frames, Banach frames and atomic decompositions are considered as   special kinds of (Banach) pair frames.  Some frame-like inequalities  for (Banach)  pair frames are presented. The elements that participant  in the construction of (Ba...

Coherent Frames

Frames which can be generated by the action of some operators (e.g. translation, dilation, modulation, ...) on a single element $f$ in a Hilbert space, called coherent frames. In this paper, we introduce a class of continuous frames in a Hilbert space $mathcal{H}$ which is indexed by some locally compact group $G$, equipped with its left Haar measure. These frames are obtained as the orbits of ...
